YouTube content strategy for SaaS companies
How SaaS teams use explainers, demos, and founder-led YouTube without turning the channel into a silent product tour.
By Kohsarian3 min read
A demo is not a channel. Product walkthroughs matter. Buyers still need a way to understand the category, the problem, and why the product exists — not only which button to press.
SaaS is one of the rooms Kohsarian works in, alongside professional services, podcasts, and founders. It is not the whole company. The method is the same: strategy, production, packaging, distribution, optimization. This article is the SaaS version of that method.
A strategy that fits a software company
Run three kinds of video on purpose: explainers that teach the problem before the UI, demos a buyer can follow without a sales call, and founder-led or practitioner pieces from customer questions and changelog stories. Tie them with playlists. Measure whether people stay and whether they find the next video. Do not measure the channel only on a demo request form in week one.
Why demos alone stall
A silent tour with music assumes the viewer already knows why they are there. Most do not. They arrived from a related topic, a founder clip, or a search for a job-to-be-done. If the first 30 seconds are a settings panel, they leave. Kohsarian’s SaaS films (including work such as Agent Smart and Drafto) are built to be watched: UI capture with a story, not a screen recording dumped on a timeline.
Content pillars that usually work
- Customer problems, in the customer’s language.
- Category education that does not require your login.
- Product education and honest demos.
- Founder or operator point of view — see YouTube for founders.
- Product updates, only when they change a user’s life, not every pixel.
- Implementation stories you are allowed to tell, without invented metrics.
Two formats at the start. A 5–10 minute explainer. A 3–8 minute demo with a spoken spine. Shorts can later carry a single distinction. How to build a YouTube content strategy is the generic version of this map.
B2B software, without a lead fantasy
YouTube can make a complex product understandable before a salesperson joins. That is useful. It is not the same as “YouTube for B2B lead generation” as a guaranteed machine. If someone promises pipeline from a content calendar, ask what they will refund when the graph is quiet. Kohsarian will not write that sentence.
Founder-led content that is not a vlog
Founders already have the raw material: support tickets, sales objections, the reason the company exists. A weekly sit-down that answers one of those is enough. Personality helps. A travel vlog usually does not, unless that is actually the brand.
The operating system
- Audit the existing channel and the product story.
- Position: who it is for, which jobs you will teach.
- Create: script or outline, then an edit paced for retention.
- Publish: titles, thumbnails, playlists — YouTube SEO as intent, not tags.
- Learn: what held, what dropped, what the next demo should change.
Production lives on YouTube video editing. The wider offer lives on YouTube for SaaS companies. Pricing for monthly systems is on Kohsarian pricing.
Common mistakes
- Publishing every release note as a video.
- Letting product marketing write titles only an existing user understands.
- Hiding the founder because “the brand should be the product.”
- Asking an editor to invent positioning in the timeline.
- Treating YouTube as a dumping ground for webinar recordings with no cut.
Questions
- Are product demos enough?
- They are necessary and not sufficient. Buyers also need the problem, the category, and a reason to trust the people who built the product.
- Is this a lead-generation playbook?
- No. YouTube can support a B2B motion. We do not promise pipeline, MQLs, or revenue from a channel.
